churning water on the River Barle

River Barle Exmoor

The River Barle a contributory to the River Exe is a beautiful flow of water that meanders through valleys, through villages and under bridges. The waters currents create fast flowing eddies and smooth shapes as the flow twists and turns on its voyage down past river banks and houses. In the summer the Barle can be quiet. Hardly a whisper. A simple trickle and mummer with the occasional song voice coming through the flow. The river can also be noisy, angry and fierce. The flow cascades, crashes and tumbles as it catches the water that flows down from the Exmoor hills.
