Woodland, Paths, Rivers & songs

Many of my walks lead me to a woodland in North Devon—a place of calm, tranquility, and healing. When my mind feels troubled, I seek solace among the trees. The rustling of wind through the leaves carries whispers of peace, while the gentle murmur of the river weaves its melody through the undergrowth. I wander, capturing not only how the woodland looks but how it feels. Each image becomes a reflection: of a thought, an emotion, or an anxiety. Sometimes, it gives shape to an idea or unveils a hidden part of myself.

The woodland is alive with light and shadow. Sunlight filter through the canopy, piercing the dimness to illuminate secret places where moss glows emerald green and tiny insects dance in golden rays. Shadows stretch and shift, creating patterns that hint at new worlds waiting to be discovered. In their interplay, light reveals and shadows conceal, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary and evoking a sense of wonder and discovery. It is here, among the trees, that I find a space to heal.

a Path to Reflection

The sounds of the woodland blend seamlessly into this experience. An alarmed bird flits through the branches with a sharp cry, its warning breaking the stillness. Nearby, a startled deer dashes away, the rustle of disturbed foliage and the sharp snap of twigs marking its swift retreat into the deeper shadows. These moments feel like whispers from the heart of the woodland, reminding me of the delicate balance of life and its unseen connections.

I’ve often come here to embody emotions—strength or vulnerability, clarity or confusion. The trees, steadfast and enduring, stand as symbols of resilience and solidity, yet they also evoke fragility and childlike wonder. The woodland, with its intricate dance of light, shadow, foliage, and sound, becomes more than a place. It mirrors the self, capturing moments in time and the spaces we inhabit within.
